While Charles Mackerras was studying opera conducting he was increasingly determined to conduct orchestral music as well. A favourite composer was Dvorak – and his love of Dvorak’s music brought destiny knocking on the door.

In Prague Charles Mackerras became deeply enamoured with the Czechoslovakian people and their culture – and he was mesmerised when he discovered this music by a Moravian composer who was almost unknown outside Czechoslovakia except for just one or two works – Leos Janacek.
