5 Studying Conducting in England
Young Charles took the opportunity of asking Ormandy’s advice about studying conducting and the Maestro recommended he should audition for the Juilliard School of Music in New York – however – already thinking very independently, he preferred the idea of going into conducting through attaching himself to an opera company – and for that he decided to go to London – initially as an oboe player.
